Update on Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

Effective Date:

Starting July 1, 2024, the maximum eligible age for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) will be reduced to 35 years old. This change does not apply to individuals who hold a Masters (research) or Doctoral Degree (PhD), as they remain eligible if they are under 50 years old, nor to those with Hong Kong or British National Overseas passports.

Key Changes

1. Age Limit Reduction:

The age limit for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) is now set at 35 years, down from 50 years.

2. Exceptions:

  • Applicants who have completed a Masters (research) or Doctoral Degree (PhD) to fulfill the Australian study requirement can still apply if they are under 50 years old.
  • Holders of Hong Kong or British National Overseas passports are also exempt from the age restriction if they are under 50.

3. Other Changes:

  • Shorter post-study work rights.
  • Stricter English language proficiency requirements.

4. Onshore Student Visa Applications:

Individuals holding certain visas, including Visitor and Temporary Graduate visas, will no longer be able to apply for Student visas while in Australia.

Purpose of Changes

These modifications are designed to better align the Temporary Graduate visa program with Australia's immigration objectives and labor market demands.
